A morphologically distinct cavernicolous salamander Proteus anguinus from southeastern Slovenia (Bela Krajina) is described as P. a. parkelj ssp. n. It differs from P. a. anguinus in a dark pigmentation, fully developed eyes, a skull with broader and shorter bones and fewer teeth, a voluminous jaw musculature that gives the head a bulky appearance, a proportionally longer trunk with a higher number of vertebrae, shorter extremities, and a shorter tail. Most of these traits are considered to be plesiomorphic character states. An allozyme analysis over 40 loci has shown the new dark pigmented taxon to be genetically similar to a white and troglomorphic neighbouring population from Stična (DNei = 0.23). Both populations in turn are genetically dissimilar to a... |

The post-Glacial history of the forests in the Netherlands has been reconstructed fairly well by pollen analysis of several bogs. At the same time stratigraphical investigations shed some light on the way in which these bogs had been built up, i.e. on the plants by which, in the various forest periods, peat was formed. Though these data are quite interesting, they do not give a good impression of the entire synchronal herbaceous flora, as they are limited to the peatbuilding plants. As yet very little is known of the rest of the vegetation (water-, marsh- and land-plants) of the late-Pleistocene and Holocene periods. We must look for their remains in other deposits, particularly in clay and sand, wherein however few land plants will be found, as their... |

At the time when the Royal Zoological Society Natura Artis Magistra known in Holland as “Artis” was founded in 1838 the ground for the study of malacology lay already well prepared. For ever since the days when the early Dutch seafarers explored the commercial routes to East and to West, all kinds of curiosities and natural history objects found their way to the motherland, brought back by the homebound sailors. |

Tropical biologists are often frustrated in their attempts to study plants, animals, and climate in the forest canopy because of the difficulty of access to this region 20-50 meters high. This problem can be overcome by the use of free-standing towers (Pasoh, Malaya; Barro Colorado Island, Panama) or by tree platforms (Ulu Gombak, Malaya). In April, 1978, we constructed a canopy platform and ladder at our study site in the Kutai Nature Reserve, East Kalimantan, Indonesia, to collect data on forest phenology and the travel paths of arboreal birds and mammals. Since our 39 meter-high platform and ladder are economical to construct and safe to use (desirable features) we describe its construction here in more detail. We selected a large (180 cm dbh) Shorea... |

Several filamentous oomycete species of the genus Halophytophthora have recently been described from marine environments, mostly from subtropical and tropical ecosystems. During a survey of oomycetes from leaf litter of Spartina alterniflora in salt marshes of southeastern Georgia, isolates of four taxa were recovered that bore similarity to some members of Halophytophthora but were highly divergent from isolates of Halophytophthora s.str. based on a combined sequence analysis of two nuclear loci. In phylogenetic analyses, these isolates were placed basal to a monophyletic group comprised of Pythium of the Pythiaceae and the Peronosporaceae. Sequence and morphology of these taxa diverged from the type species Halophytophthora vesicula, which was placed... |

All 168 known species within the 6 genera of the caddisfly family Helicopsychidae are cataloged. Included are all synonyms, type localities, type depositories and species ranges. A historical summary of the taxonomy used within the family is given as well as the biology of the different life stages on generic level. Due to uncertain taxonomic position Helicopsyche helicoidella (Vallot, 1855), Helicopsyche pupoidea (Gould, 1864), Helicopsyche scalaris Hagen, 1864, Helicopsyche thelidomus Hagen, 1864, Helicopsyche arenifera (Lea, 1834), Helicopsyche braziliensis (Swainson, 1840) and Helicopsyche colombiensis von Siebold, 1856 are not included in the catalog. Helicopsyche fannii Rougemont, 1879 was never described and is listed as nomen nudum. Helicopsyche... |

This catalogue provides an annotated listing of the liverworts and hornworts from the Guianas (Guyana, Surinam, French Guiana), based on the literature and on new data that have become available in the framework of the “Flora of the Guianas” project. In total 375 species in 93 genera are recorded, including more than 100 species and 28 genera new to the Guianas. A list of synonyms (including 30 new ones), a systematic arrangement of the genera and families, and an index to the collectors are also given. |

This final part of the Coelenterate type catalogue lists 274 nominal types (183 Gorgonacea, 9 Actiniaria and 82 Scleractinia). Six not previously depicted types are represented by photographic illustrations of their habit. Furthermore lists are provided of schizotypes, i.e. fragments of types housed in other musea donated at some time to the Zoological Museum of Amsterdam, and of missing types, i.e. types, which should be in the ZMA but were found missing in a recent survey of the collections. |

A comprehensive generic catalogue of the Vespidae is presented. New nomenclatural changes include synonymy of Alastoroides Saussure, 1856, with Paralastor Saussure 1856; Araucodynerus Willink, 1968, with Hypodynerus Saussure 1855; and Paranortonia Bequaert, 1940, with Parazumia Saussure, 1855. Paravespa Bell, 1936, non Radoszkowski, 1886, is a synonym of Eustenogaster van der Vecht, 1966. |

After Mr. F. T. Valck Lucassen's decease in september 1939 his collections have been transported to the Leiden Museum for better preservation. In 1941 the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, could acquire these considerable collections which also included those of Janson (London) and Girard (Geneva). These collections contain a great number of species, often represented by the types or series of types, many of which described by Valck Lucassen himself. In an obituary Uyttenboogaart (1940: 1-2) gave an enumeration of all papers by Valck Lucassen, most of which are on Cetonids. The monograph on the genus Lomaptera, announced by Uyttenboogaart, had to be translated, illustrated and to be made ready for printing; it was published in 1961 by the... |

This catalogue resulted from our attempts (since 1963) to accommodate and modernize the labelling of type-material of Recent fishes in the collections of the Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam (ZMA), now named Institute of Taxonomie Zoology, University of Amsterdam. We traced 6625 type-specimens of 714 nominal species or subspecies, 228 of which are primary type-specimens (holotype, lectotype, or neotype); moreover, the collection contains one or more syntypes of 222 nominal (sub-) species. A few syntypes are presently indicated as future lectotype in the collection, awaiting publication by various specialists. Such specimens are not distinguished in this catalogue. It is possible that lectotype designations for some species have been validly published, which... |
